The design
A large ornate cross surrounded by four smaller crosses echoes the arrangement of the Jerusalem cross, connecting the composition to crusader history. Framed figures, intricate ornament, and sculptural details draw on the visual language of European religious and decorative art.
The inscription beneath the cross connects those references to the wider European theme. History, symbolism, and art meet within one layered composition. Look closely: there is more here than the outline.
