The story behind the work
At the foundation of the composition are the workers: bare figures shaping nature, from which grows the branch of the eagle, my symbol of divine authority. The image moves upwards from the industrial world towards sculpture, art, and inspiration.
Within the white frame is Hyacinthe Chevalier’s “The Genius of Comedy,” created for the Vaudeville Theatre in 1868. At its feet sits what I portray as a decadent, decaying industrial world. The runic reference draws on the Möjbro Runestone, which I use here as an allusion to a rider’s call to conflict.
Higher in the composition is work by one of my great inspirations, Hugo Reinhold Höppener, known as “Fidus” (1868–1948), alongside Franz Metzner’s “Musik” facade for the Weinhaus Rheingold, created in 1907.
The rest I leave to you to decide and decipher. As with everything, this means something.
