The story behind the artwork
The composition is organised around the Cross of the Knights Hospitaller. In my interpretation, Eden, Valhalla, Heaven, and a reworked scene of the Baron’s Crusade meet around an arch representing Europe. Odin, Caesar, and a deliberately blank third figure invite the viewer to consider their own place within the work.
Smaller references include Caspar David Friedrich’s “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog,” classical architecture, an eagle on a throne, the Holy Lance, and Zeus’s lightning bolt on a Corinthian pillar. Roman, Christian, and Norse traditions run throughout the composition.
The search for the Grail in Wolfram von Eschenbach’s “Parzival” helped shape the concept. I also included a small reference to the Castle of Wonders as depicted in Hans-Jürgen Syberberg’s film imagery.
The related “Erwählung Print” explores the Big Dipper’s movement around Polaris. Its deliberately irregular arrangement expresses my sense of approaching change. “Erwählung” speaks here of election, selection, and chosenness: a question of purpose and destiny, informed by Hegel’s writing on world history. That companion concept connects with this work, rather than describing a printed reverse side.
